Frequently asked questions

What does Dock Switcher do?

Dock Switcher lets you build a separate Dock for each kind of work, like coding, design or video, and switch between them in one click. Each Dock keeps its own apps, folders, icon size, position and auto-hide settings. Your Mac still has one Dock at a time. Dock Switcher swaps in the one you need.

How much does Dock Switcher cost? Is there a subscription?

Dock Switcher is $4.99, once, on the Mac App Store. There’s no subscription and there are no in-app purchases. Family Sharing is included, so your family can use it too.

Which Macs does Dock Switcher run on?

Dock Switcher needs macOS 14 Sonoma or later. It runs natively on Macs with Apple silicon and on Intel-based Macs.

Why does Dock Switcher ask for permission to control the Dock?

The first time you switch, macOS asks whether Dock Switcher may control the Dock. This is a standard macOS Automation permission. Dock Switcher changes your Dock the same way System Settings does: it updates the Dock’s own preferences and restarts the Dock. Without this permission, the Dock can’t change. You can review it any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Automation › Dock Switcher.

Why does my Dock briefly disappear when I switch?

That’s normal. To apply a new Dock, Dock Switcher restarts the macOS Dock, just as System Settings does when you change some Dock options. It takes about a second, and the Dock redraws with your new apps and settings. Your open apps and windows aren’t affected.

Will Dock Switcher mess up my current Dock?

No. Before your first switch, Dock Switcher automatically backs up your original Dock. You can bring it back any time with one click on Restore Original Dock. You can also capture your current Dock as a new Dock in Dock Switcher, so it’s always one switch away.

What can I put in a Dock?

Everything the native Dock holds: apps, folders and stacks, files, web links and spacers (regular and small). Folders can display as a stack or a folder, view as fan, grid, list or automatic, and sort by name, date added, date modified, date created or kind.

Can each Dock have its own size, position and settings?

Yes. Every Dock has its own icon size, magnification and maximum magnified size, position (left, bottom or right), auto-hide and auto-hide delay, animation speed, minimize effect (genie or scale), and more. See Dock settings explained for the full list.

How do I switch between Docks?

Pick a Dock from the Dock Switcher menu bar icon or the main window, press the keyboard shortcut you assigned to it, run the Switch Dock action in the Shortcuts app (or ask Siri: “Switch to Design in Dock Switcher”), or open a URL like dockswitcher://switch?dock=Design.

Can Dock Switcher switch Docks automatically?

Yes. Automations can switch Docks on a schedule, on the days and at the time you choose, or when an external display is connected or disconnected. Dock Switcher needs to be running for automations to fire.

Can Dock Switcher open my apps when I switch?

Yes, if you want it to. Each Dock has an option to open that Dock’s apps when you switch to it. It’s off unless you turn it on.

Does Dock Switcher sync between my Macs?

Yes. Turn on iCloud sync and your Docks appear on every Mac signed in to your iCloud account. There’s no new account to create. If a Dock includes an app that isn’t installed on one of your Macs, Dock Switcher simply skips it there.

Do I need to create an account?

No. Dock Switcher has no accounts and nothing to sign up for. Sync uses the iCloud account you’re already signed in to.

Does Dock Switcher collect any data about me?

No. Dock Switcher has no analytics, no ads, no tracking and no third-party SDKs. Your Docks live on your Mac and, if you turn on sync, in your private iCloud database, which we can’t access. Read the Privacy Policy for details.

Can I share my Docks with teammates?

Yes. Export any Dock as a .dockswitcher file and send it however you like. Your teammate imports it into Dock Switcher as a new Dock.

Can I hide Dock Switcher from the Dock?

Yes. Dock Switcher lives in the menu bar, and you can choose to hide its icon from the Dock so it stays out of your way.

How do I go back to my original Dock or uninstall Dock Switcher?

Choose Restore Original Dock in Dock Switcher to put back the Dock you had before your first switch. Then quit Dock Switcher and move it to the Trash. Your Dock stays as it was restored. See Backup & restore for more.
